Thien Mu Pagoda

Thien Mu pagoda is about 4km Northwest of Hue city center. You can get here either by boat or by bike. The road is very scenic but the severe heat in Hue means that you will have a perfect ride in early morning or late afternoon.

History:

There are many legends about Thien Mu pagoda. Once upon a time, local residents saw an old lady in red appear every night on top of the hill. She said that one day, the Lord would pass by and buildsomething of great importance. From then on, the hill was named Thien Mu Son (Mountain of Lady from Heaven). Lord Nguyen Hoang (1558-1613) actually went past the hill. When he heard the story, he decided to build a pagoda and named it Thien Mu.

Architecture:

As you approach the pagoda, the 7 story octagoner tower that you catch sight of is called Phuoc Duyen tower, built in mid-19th century. 7 is the sacred number in budhism. In the middle of the area is where Buddha is worshiped, called “dien Dai Hung”, with impressive Budha sculptures and a giant bell. The bell which measures 2.5m in height and 2 tonnes in weight was created since early 18th century.

Thien Mu is also attractive in its landscape. On top of the hill you can have a mindboggling view of the Perfume River and surrounding areas. Lines of trees and antique Buddhism relics will bring about a peaceful feeling that many of us crave for.
